Course: Side Dish
Cuisine: American
Ingredients Method Notes

Ingredients

  • 4 large russet potatoes thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or Gruyère for a richer flavor
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish optional

Method

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Make the Sauce: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Stir in the flour and cook for another minute, making a roux. Gradually whisk in the cream, stirring until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Layer Potatoes: Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in a greased baking dish. Pour half of the cream sauce over the potatoes and sprinkle with half of the cheese.
  4. Repeat Layers: Add the remaining potatoes, followed by the rest of the cream sauce and cheese.
  5. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20-30 minutes, until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
  6. Serve: Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with herbs if desired.

Notes

This results in creamy, cheesy scalloped potatoes with a golden crust!
